What is a Celebrant?
A celebrant is someone dedicated to creating unforgettable, meaningful ceremonies to celebrate life’s biggest moments, whether that’s a wedding, funeral, vow renewal, naming ceremony, or something uniquely yours. Unlike religious officiants, celebrants offer a personal, secular approach, working with you to craft a ceremony that reflects your personality, beliefs, and story.
Why Choose a Celebrant?
Whether you are planning a wedding, vow renewal, a service to say goodbye to a loved one or any life moment worth celebrating, an Independent Celebrant can bring choice and ultimate personalisation making each ceremony unique.
Your ceremony can take place anywhere you choose, from a sandy beach, to a picturesque woodland, your favourite garden, or even the comfort of your own home. Wedding ceremonies, for example, do not need to be held at a licensed venue, they can be as unique as you are!
Understanding Different Types of Celebrants
Your Day, Your Way
Humanist vs. Independent Celebrants
It is essential to understand the difference between Independent and Humanist Celebrants, particularly when selecting a celebrant for a funeral.

Humanist celebrants offer exclusively non-religious ceremonies, making them ideal for those seeking a purely secular farewell. However, this approach means they cannot include hymns, prayers, or religious rituals. So, if you are planning a service for a loved one who held some religious beliefs but would prefer not to involve a minister, a Humanist celebrant may not provide the flexibility you need.

In contrast, as an Independent celebrant, I offer complete adaptability. I can incorporate any elements you wish, whether religious, spiritual, cultural, or a blend of all three to design a ceremony that feels deeply personal and reflective of your loved one’s life. This flexibility allows me to honour your wishes and create a service that truly respects and celebrates the individual during a funeral or reflect you and your family's values during a joyous ceremony like a wedding.
Can you be Legally Married by a Celebrant?
Sadly, at the moment a celebrant cannot legally marry you, although reviews of the UK wedding laws established in 1836 are taking place.
While a celebrant can design and lead a stunning, meaningful wedding ceremony in the location of your choice, the legal aspect of your marriage must still be completed separately at a register office. This legal formalisation is straightforward, typically taking around 15 minutes with a registrar, where you and your partner will sign the marriage register in the presence of two witnesses.

Once the legalities are complete, you are free to celebrate your marriage in the way that suits you best. Your celebrant-led ceremony can be held wherever and however you like, whether it’s a traditional setting, outdoors, or somewhere special to you both.
This approach has the benefit of flexibility, enabling you to enjoy a deeply personal ceremony that reflects your relationship, without the restrictions of licensed venues or set wording.

With a celebrant, your wedding day can be exactly as you envision, making it a truly unique and memorable experience.
